Possibly one of my favourite walks to date. Nestled in the heart of Bedfordshire lies a delightful 8-mile circular walk taking in sections of the John Bunyan Trail and the Ouse Valley Way to create a circular walk around the beautiful village of Stevington.
Meandering through the charming villages of Pavenham and Oakley, picturesque route winds alongside the tranquil River Great Ouse, offering breathtaking views of the English countryside.
Starting Point: Stevington
Your journey begins in Stevington, a quaint village renowned for its historical landmarks and scenic surroundings. Stevington Windmill dating back to 1770, stands proudly amidst the village’s rural landscape. We started (and finished) our circular walk here, but you can of course start anywhere on the route.

Walking through Pavenham
From Stevington, head south towards Pavenham along peaceful country lanes and footpaths, passing some wonderful quintessentially British homes. As you approach Pavenham, the ambiance shifts to one of tranquility, with its ancient cottages and the gentle murmur of the River Great Ouse providing a serene backdrop to your walk.

Pit stop!
No ramble through the countryside is complete without a pint and a packet of crisps in a county pub and we stumbled across The Cock Inn in Pavenham at just the right time. A no-frills English pub offering a warm welcome and traditional pub fare. Nestled in the heart of the village, The Cock Inn has a large pub garden overlooking the gorgeous countryside and provides the perfect spot to relax and refuel before continuing your journey.
Along the River Great Ouse
Leaving Pavenham, your route follows the path alongside the River Great Ouse. This stretch of the walk is particularly scenic, with the river meandering gently through the countryside. Keep an eye out for local wildlife (paying particular care near the cows!) and enjoy the soothing sounds of nature as you stroll along the riverbank.

Passing through Oakley
Continuing your circular route, you’ll pass through Oakley. A whistle stop tour, you won’t see much more than the cars driving past as it’s mainly a road side walk (along the footpath) I did take a moment to appreciate the bridge and watched the river for a bit before the rain started!

Returning to Stevington
The return journey offers further opportunities to admire the Bedfordshire countryside, with its rolling hills and expansive fields stretching out before you. We particularly enjoyed admiring some of the beautiful homes along the river, before we saw the welcome site of the mill again, and got back to the car.
